Colorado is one of the most expensive states in the country in which to raise a family. Shockingly high food, housing, and transportation costs continue to hurt local families, particularly those who are least able to afford the constant price increases. Property taxes have spiked, resulting in record high revenues for school districts across the state.
While the cost of living has become increasingly burdensome for local families, school districts across Colorado and locally have continued to receive record-setting amounts of tax-payer revenue. Adjusted for inflation, Colorado public education K-12 total revenue per student has increased nearly 30% since 2014 and nearly $2 trillion in federal funds were distributed across Colorado’s school districts via the American Rescue Plan.
Families are financially hurting, but our local school district wants more of their money to spend on pet projects and non-academic content. At the same time, over HALF of CCSD students have not been provided the academic skills necessary to ensure they are college and career ready, according to the Colorado Department of Education statistics.
Our community wants school budgets that focus resources on inspiring academic excellence, while promoting equality of opportunity for all students. Our local kids deserve schools that provide essential literacy and math skills to all the students, enabling each child to reach his or her full academic potential. When our schools divert their attention to non-academic priorities, our neighborhood children’s dreams and futures are hurt.
Increasing families’ tax burdens to divert money to districts which are already receiving record-high revenues is unfair to families and unfair to students. Cherry Creek School District must be transparent, accountable, and accessible to all families and community members. Students should be served by schools focused on ensuring they are able to live up to their full academic potentials.
